How the 'Find My' App in iOS 13 and macOS Catalina Works

Apple at WWDC unveiled a new "Find My" app, which is available across its Mac and iOS platforms. Find My on iOS replaces Find My Friends and Find My iPhone, and on Mac, it introduces a native "Find" app for the first time as an alternative to using iCloud on the web.

Find My has a useful feature that's designed to let you locate your lost devices even when they're not connected to WiFi or a cellular network by leveraging nearby Bluetooth devices. Your lost iPhone, iPad, or Mac will be able to communicate via Bluetooth with any nearby Apple device, relaying its location right back to you.

Apple described the feature on stage on Monday, but today provided additional details to WIRED for those interested in an overview of just how it works.

Apple designed the Find My feature with privacy in mind. It uses an encryption system that prevents people from abusing it for tracking purposes, making your personal location unavailable to people aiming to intercept your device's Bluetooth signal and from Apple itself.

Apple's encryption solution requires "Find My" users to have at least two Apple devices. As relayed by Apple to WIRED, each device emits a constantly changing public key that nearby Apple devices use to encrypt and upload your geolocation data. Only other Apple devices that you own (and that are linked to your Apple ID and protected with two-step authentication) are able to decrypt those locations.

Because only your own devices can decrypt the encrypted location signal that's being sent from a lost device, no one, not even Apple, can intercept it and locate you or your devices.

Apple says that "Find My" uses just tiny bits of data piggybacked on existing network traffic so there's no impact on device battery life, data usage, or privacy. WIRED has a specific set of steps on how Find My works, from setup to what happens when a device is lost, which is worth checking out for those interested.

Basically, when a device you own goes missing, it's going to broadcast the aforementioned public key, which can be picked up by any other Apple device owned by anyone.

Say someone steals your MacBook. Even if the thief carries it around closed and disconnected from the internet, your laptop will emit its rotating public key via Bluetooth. A nearby stranger's iPhone, with no interaction from its owner, will pick up the signal, check its own location, and encrypt that location data using the public key it picked up from the laptop. The public key doesn't contain any identifying information, and since it frequently rotates, the stranger's iPhone can't link the laptop to its prior locations either.

The stranger's iPhone then uploads two things to Apple's server: The encrypted location, and a hash of the laptop's public key, which will serve as an identifier. Since Apple doesn't have the private key, it can't decrypt the location.

The Find My app is available in iOS 13, iPadOS, and macOS Catalina right now, but it's not going to be a fully functional system until these software updates are installed on millions of devices around the world. Also Read:Free Online Movie Streaming Sites in 2019

Reason Apple Didn’t Buy Tesla in 2013 Was Because They Couln’t Fire Musk

We recently covered the old 2013 deal between Tesla and Apple, where the latter would have acquired all assets of the former. That, obviously, didn’t happen but we finally have an answer to why. It’s because of Elon Musk.

Elon Musk is a controversial character. He is the CEO and Chairman of both SpaceX and Tesla, as well as being a gigantic internet meme thanks to his appearances in things like Joe Regan’s show, where he smoked cannabis in front of the camera, as well as PewDiePie’s Meme Review.

And that personality could have been what ended up on a no-deal between Tesla and Apple. Craig Irwin, an analyst at Roth Capital Partners, has commented on the matter:

“Regarding the acquisition, my understanding is Apple wanted Elon Musk to step away, and that was a deal killer,”

Apple isn’t known for letting companies manage themselves after acquiring them. They mostly become just another brand for what’s actually an Apple product underneath (like Beats), or get entirely absorbed by the previously trillion dollar company.

Apple hasn’t commented on the matter, and we don’t expect them to. But we have reached out for comment.

What are your thoughts? Should Elon Musk have stepped down and let Apple buyout the company? Let us know in the comments below.Weiterlesen auoklicker

Informant 5: The Calendar App to Rule Them All

Apple is pretty good about updating its products, but it seems to have forgotten about the Calendar app. The makers of Informant 5 remember, and the latest update to this calendar and task-management app are a productivity game changer. Unlike Apple's Calendar, Informant 5 is updated regularly with improvements based on customer feedback. Just check out the newest feature; the Time Picker.

In previous updates, users entered their event times using a wheel with dials. The newest update replaces the wheels with a numerical keypad. It is small tweaks like this, changes that improve efficiency and the customer experience, that make Informant a stand-out calendar app. The update also improves how you set your date; the year changes automatically when you scroll past December so that you don't accidentally schedule an event for last January. The creators behind Informant are responsive to feedback and care about making their calendar app not just better than Apple's, but also the best calendar software on the market.

Some of our readers certainly agree that Informant is the best. Here's just some of the feedback we've gotten from users:

"I love the app so much that I got it for my Mac as well. Best money spent." — Dena Gann

"Informant 5 is the best calendar app." — Eugene McCain

"I recently got the Informant 5 app. I love it. I heard about it on the iPhone Life Podcast." — Steve Spencer

Once you've experienced Informant for yourself, you'll never want to go back to the default calendar app. You can see what all the hype is about when you sign up for a free iOS trial.

How to Enhance Siri Requests in iOS By Adding Your Personal Contact Details

If you add your personal contact information to your iPhone or iPad, it allows Siri to carry out more complex queries and offer better suggestions, such as giving you directions home or reminding you about your scheduled meeting when you arrive at the office.

For best results, you need to make sure your self-identifying contact card – called My Card in the Contacts app – includes sufficient information about you. Your iPhone or iPad should use your Apple ID to create your contact card, but you may need to provide additional details like your name and address to complete it.

To do so, open the Contacts app on your device and tap My Card at the top of your contacts list, then tap Edit and enter your information – you can insert additional fields as desired using the plus buttons. If you don't see My Card, tap the Add button and enter your info, then return to your device's Home screen and follow the steps below.

Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.

Scroll down and tap Contacts.

Tap My Info.

Select your name in the contacts list that appears.

Next, tap Siri & Search.

Make sure the toggle next to Siri & Suggestions is in the green ON position.

If you like, you can enable these personalized Siri Suggestions on your iPhone's lock screen – just make sure the toggle next to Allow on Lock Screen is also in the green ON position.

You can also enhance Siri's responses by establishing relationships between your familial contacts. Click here to learn how.Note Tips: Top 3 Alternative Sites to TamilDbox 2019

Survey Finds iPhone XR Remained Best-Selling iPhone Model Last Quarter in United States

iPhone XR remained the best-selling iPhone model in the United States in the first quarter of 2019, as it was in the fourth quarter of 2018, according to a survey conducted by research firm CIRP and provided to MacRumors.

The research firm found that the iPhone XR accounted for 38 percent of U.S. iPhone sales during the quarter, ahead of the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max with a combined 21 percent of sales during the three-month period.

If accurate, the data is rather unsurprising, as the iPhone XR has the lowest price of the three new iPhones that Apple released in late 2018. The colorful handset starts at $749, compared to $999 for the iPhone XS and $1,099 for the iPhone XS Max, with many reviews labeling it the "best iPhone for the money."

Moreover, in January, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed that the iPhone XR was the most popular iPhone every day since it launched.

CIRP co-founder Josh Lowitz:

iPhone XR continues to dominate US iPhone sales. It remains the best-selling individual model again this quarter, after launch early in the December 2018 quarter. In the US, the newest iPhone models sold about as well as the newest models a year ago, at about 60% of total sales. Based on these trends, we estimate an Average Selling Price of around $800, a decrease from the previous quarter.

The usual caveats apply, including that Apple no longer discloses iPhone unit sales, nor has it ever provided a model-by-model breakdown of iPhone sales. CIRP bases its findings on a rather small survey of 500 customers.Sponsor ads:

How to Listen to Apple Music on the Web

Apple still doesn't offer an official online web player for Apple Music, but if you want to enjoy the streaming service on a computer that doesn't have iTunes installed (your office PC, for example) there is another solution.

It's called "Musish," a free third-party web player for Apple Music subscribers, created by software engineer Brychan Bennett-Odlum and his team, Raphaël Vigée, James Jarvis, and Filip Grebowski.

To play Apple Music on the web through Musish, you need to sign in using your Apple ID. If you're concerned about account security, don't be -– sign-in is handled in a separate window under the Apple.com domain and Musish doesn't request, log, or gain access to user information.

Once you've signed in, you'll see the usual Apple Music tabs on the upper left corner of the Musish interface: For You, Browse, Radio, and My Library. Bear in mind, though, that some categories are slimmed down compared to what you'll find in the native iOS Music app or iTunes. Social features like friend profiles are currently unavailable, for example, and there are no radio features yet.

That said, the For You tab features plenty to keep you busy, including your recently played songs, albums in heavy rotation, and personalized mixes, as well as the day's playlists, albums, and new releases.

Likewise, the Browse section includes top songs, daily top 100 playlists, top playlists, top albums, and a genres tab. If you're searching for something specific, you can also use the site's upper-right search bar, which remains open on every tab.

To play music, just click an album/playlist and then click Play, Shuffle, or select a specific song. playback controls will appear at the bottom left of the screen, where you can adjust volume, turn on repeat, turn on shuffle, check out lyrics, and select what's up next.
